During his senior year of high school, Matt Cottle discovered his calling in life while watching a culinary demonstration. Unfortunately, culinary school wasn’t an option for him, because Matt is autistic and traditional classrooms aren’t conducive to his learning style. Even more unfortunate, 91% of all autistic adults are unemployed. Staring down that startling statistic, Matt knew the odds were stacked against him. However, much like King George VI (whose name inspired that of our bakery) Matt refused to let the odds win.

Fueled by the love and support of his family, he attended and graduated from the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC) Vocational and Life Skills Academy CulinaryWorks® program. From there, he took three years’ worth of one-on-one baking lessons from Heather Netzloff, pastry chef and founder of Rumpelstiltskin Granola.

In 2012, Matt and his mother, Peggy, launched Stuttering King Bakery. Operating out of the Cottles’ home kitchen, Stuttering King Bakery specializes in muffins, brownies, blondies, bars, cookies, and scones, specifically for event and business catering in the Phoenix metro valley. Matt handcrafts each pastry with high quality, natural, and locally-sourced ingredients. But Matt and his Stuttering King Bakery are so much more than ridiculously delicious baked goods.

We want to impact the autistic world and serve as an inspiration for other autistic people to be productive, active members of the community. To quote Walt Disney, “All dreams can come true…if we have the courage to pursue them.” We want to inspire everyone in the autism community to make their dreams come true—to persevere tirelessly for success—because we deserve nothing short of incredible. And to quote our bakery’s own inspiration, King George VI, “The highest of distinctions is service to others.” That’s why Matt plans to eventually open his own brick-and-mortar bakery, where he’ll employ and teach the art of baking to others with autism.
